What Dress Can You Wear to a Mormon Wedding
At My Amazing Wedding Dress, we help many Mormon brides or brides from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or LDS Brides. Shopping for an LDS wedding dress hasn't always been easy or convenient for the latter day bride; however, with My Amazing Wedding dress, getting a beautiful modest LDS approved wedding dress has never been easier. If you need a Mormon wedding gown that meets all the LDS standards of modesty, we've got you covered. We also do replicas so if you are a bride on a budget, we might be able to help you make your dream wedding dress at a cheaper price than many traditional bridal stores.
We specialize in custom made wedding dresses, so we can work together with you, create a sketch of what your dream dress would look like, and then help you create the dress. We can also use photos you send us of non-modest dresses you are interested in, and we can help you re-design the dress to be a modest version, so it meets the LDS requirements.
Are there different kinds of modest dresses? Isn't "a modest dress" good enough for an LDS wedding?
Because we help brides from many areas with many backgrounds and religious preferences, please, let us know what you are looking for and your preferences. Saying that you want a "modest" dress can mean different things to different people and different religions. LDS modest can be different than Catholic church wedding ceremony modest for example. The main difference is the dress and sleeves must be lined so that they cover the garment.
Princess Kate Middleton, for example, was married in "a modest dress" that met the modesty requirements of the church she was married in. However, it would not meet the requirements of an LDS wedding dress. If you specifically need an LDS wedding dress, please, be sure to specify that you need a dress to meet LDS requirements. Also, let us know if you need a dress that can be used in the temple ceremony, or if you would just like a dress that is modest and that meets LDS standards for the garment.
What is the difference? What kind of requirements does an LDS wedding dress and a temple dress need to meet?
There are basically 2 kinds of wedding dresses that LDS brides wear. The dress actually could be one in the same and doesn't have to be 2 dresses, but often many LDS brides use 2 dresses on their wedding day. The first dress is the one they get married(sealed) in (the temple dress) and has to meet specific standards. The second kind of LDS wedding dress is simply a modest wedding dress that will cover the temple garment.
Temple Dresses
If the bride wants to use the same dress for her reception and the temple ceremony than the dress must meet specific requirements.
Here they are.
Color: White. There are many shades of white but don't be overly concerned about the shade, as long as it is white. Some temples have allowed Ivory and other haven't so if you have questions call the temple where you plan on being married and ask for the matron. The matron will be the one that will be able to answer specific questions related to that temple.
Neckline: The neckline must be a high-neck with no cleavage showing. Some dresses, however, it is possible to wear an article of clothing (sometimes called a Dickie) that can cover the neckline and also add sleeve length if needed.
Sleeves: Long sleeves that go to the wrist.
Skirt: Long length.
The dress should not have a train unless the train can be removed for the temple ceremony or bustled up.
The back of the dress should not fall below the shoulder blades
Dress should not be too tight or revealing.
The wedding dress should be modest in design and fabric, and free of elaborate ornamentation.
Sheer fabric should be lined.
Large hoop dresses are generally not recommended either, so the hoop should be detachable if your dress has one.
LDS Wedding Dress(not a temple dress)
Let's say for your wedding reception or while you take pictures on the temple grounds you don't want to wear a dress with long sleeves, or maybe you want to wear a dress that is not white. Maybe you want a champagne colored dress or a dress that has fancy beading work or a lot of bling. While these dresses would not be appropriate for the temple ceremony, they can be worn as the wedding dress and be appropriate after the temple ceremony so many LDS brides actually use 2 dresses. They use 1 dress in the temple and then when the ceremony has ended they can go back to the dressing room and put on their "other" wedding dress which they can wear as the couple leaves the temple through the wedding exit doors. Also, all temples have white dresses that are satisfactory for a temple sealing in case you do not have a dress that can be used for a temple sealing. Church members are however encouraged to own their own clothing for the temple.
Storage of the Wedding Dress. Most temples have arrangements whereby wedding gowns may be delivered to the temple prior to your arrival. The gowns will be taken to a bride's dressing room and held for you. Advise the temple in advance, however, so the attendants can look for your dress's arrival.
The most important factor in a LDS modest wedding dress is the temple garment. If the bride is getting married in the LDS temple or has been previously endowed, she will be wearing her garments beneath her wedding dress. The dress will need to be able to cover the garment.
What if you need to pick out your wedding dress before you receive your garments?
At My Amazing Wedding Dress if you are having a dress made by us and specify that you need an LDS wedding gown. We use a special measurement chart that will give us the measurements we need to know to make your dress an LDS modest temple dress. If you are buying a dress that is already pre-made, as long as you follow the standards of modesty outlined in For the Strength of Youth, you should have no problem with your temple garments. If you are uncertain you can ask an endowed parent or friend to help you. They'll be able to tell you whether it will cover the temple garment.
